Wikitokyo:Break room

From Wikitokyo, the unofficial Megatokyo wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

The break room is for general suggestions about Wikitokyo. Want to add a new type of content? Think something should be organized differently? Need to ask a question about how the site works? This is the place.

To start a new discussion, click this link, fill in the "Subject" box with something appropriate, type your message in the big box, and put four tildes (~~~~) after it to sign and date your message. To reply to an existing discussion, hit the appropriate "edit section" link and add a colon (to indent), your reply, and four tildes.

[edit section] Captchas and Anonymous Editing

Several months back we made a decision to prevent anonymous editing of articles in an attempt to reduce the number of spambot attacks against the wiki. Although this helped greatly in reducing administrative overhead, forcing login does somewhat reduce the openness of a wiki which should to be open to the entire community. In order to bring the openness back, I figured we could try something new. To that end, I installed the ConfirmEdit Extension which will require any edits adding an external link to confirm their humanity through a captcha; even registered users, who are occasionally spam bots, will need to go through this check.

Since this change is bound to come as a nusance to some people, I have also created a Trusted Editors group. Users with a history of beneficial contributions to Wikitokyo may be appointed to this group or added upon a request to an administrator. Currently, the only benefit of being a Trusted Editor is that these users are allowed to bypass the captcha, but other benefits may be added after discussion if they seem appropriate.

While a good idea, it apparently doesn't catch every spammer (kudos to the person who caught the latest one), so vigilance is still required. Additionally, is there a "block"/"ban" function available to the moderators in the event of a human spammer? (Whoops! Didn't realize that I wasn't logged in...Rapierman)--205.188.117.13 00:38, 15 June 2007 (PDT)

[edit section] Writing Quality

It would be in our best interests to remind people about the required quality of our writing. "L33t"-speak and/or writing as if you were 3-years-old does not help our cause. If anything, it hurts it. This isn't a sandbox. We should also point out to those who are here for the first time about the dangers of inputting unconfirmed data. I've had to revert someone's entry for poor grammar and speculative, unverifiable information about Erika's age (I think we can all agree, however, that she is not 14).--Rapierman 19:21, 25 May 2007 (PDT)

[edit section] Facts vs. Commercialism

A question: Should we actually mix in the free enterprise system with our factual postings? Example: Yes, Piro does have this backpack that looks like what's called a "flapdoozy"; however, it may be outside the bounds of this wiki to post a link to "Megagear" or to mention that Fred has a similar backpack, especially since neither of these relate directly to the story except in the most remote sense possible. Opinions, please?--Rapierman 02:30, 28 April 2008 (PDT)

[edit section] Unregistered IPs or IPs Not Logged In

I'm getting a bit concerned about many of these edits from people who haven't either registered or haven't signed in. Yes, I realize that I do forget on occasion, but it's not that often, and I do remember to correct myself when I realize that I've made this error. But a ton of entries with only an IP address to identify it? Where's this coming from? Who's making all these edits and entries? I can't guarantee that the next edit with only an IP address to identify it won't be spam or grafitti.--Rapierman 02:30, 28 April 2008 (PDT)
